To say I'm shocked would be an understatement. But honestly, I feel like this is just a huge opportunity to talk about mental illness.
I have seen a lot of terrible comments from people who don't really understand how mental illness works. Does mental illness care that you're famous? Does it care that you have a lot of money? Does it care that you have a ton of loving friends or family? No.
No. It doesn't. Mental illness does not care at all what your standing in the world or society is. It will affect you whether you're rich and famous or homeless, and every financial status in between.
Is it hard to talk about this stuff? Of course it is. But this is yet another example of why it is so important to talk to someone. This stigma needs to disappear. Will it take work? Hell yeah. But it needs to be talked about. People with any form of mental illness cannot be shoved to the side just because you don't want to be brought down.
If you tell someone that you are there for them, you damn well always be there for them. For a person with mental illness, the first time they get turned away...will be one of the last times they reach out. You cannot use "if you need anything..." as a cliché or as something that you say without thinking. It is something that could mean life or death for someone.
Please...we need to fight to end this stigma. Not just because another famous person died, but because so many people have died. So many more are hurting and think that no one is there for them. We need to be willing to talk about this. I hope I've been doing my part.
And if anyone needs to talk, I am here. I'm not the best at advice, but I will always read what you say. Please do not hesitate to message me. This is especially important for my loved ones. I. Am. Here. I love you. Please, come to me.
