"Before in the community, the women weren't sure of their rights or the rights of their children. After Paz Joven started teaching about local issues, women realized they had the capacity to be leaders." Merlina, a volunteer coordinator for the rural Paz Joven program near Santiago de Chimalentenango, explained that by training advocacy coordinators in her area, women are realizing their voices, and because of this there has been less early pregnancy, child labor, and violence. #girlpower #girlupguatemala⠀ ⠀ 📸Photo: @_saul.martinez

Eliza, Alina, Reyna and Lesuiandy are the next generation of Guatemalan leaders. They are local leaders of the @unicefguatemala Paz Joven program, which provides safe spaces for girls to meet and discuss local issues as well as ways to prevent early marriage and adolescent pregnancy. The program has had great success reducing adolescent pregnancy and violence. Lesuiandy and Reyna, 23, (far right) are both trained teachers and all of the women lead grassroots advocacy asking local governments to continue to fund the program for adolescent girls in their towns nearby to Santiago de Chimaltenango. #girlpower #squadgoals #girlupguatemala⠀ 📸Photo: @_saul.martinez

Girls in Los Llano de Tuices, Guatemala proudly wore their Girl Up bracelets, put their hands together in solidarity, and chanted "Chicas Arribas" ("Girl Up" in Spanish) and "Saquilaj B'e" after the joint UN program which provides a safe space for them to meet and develop their self-esteem, learn how to resist early marriage, stay in school, and avoid pregnancies. Many girls have to drop out of school to take care of family members, but attend the program as a way to continue informal education and have a voice in their communities. ⠀ ⠀ 📸Photos: @_saul.martinez

"Because of this program, when we’re older we’ll have a better future. They’ve taught us that self-esteem is to believe in yourself, take care of yourself, to value yourself." Yoselin, 11, shares what she and her friends learn in the Saquilaj B'e program, which provides adolescent girls with safe spaces to meet and just be girls as well as holistic educational programming from local leaders to reduce forced early marriage and pregnancy. Pictured after Yoselin are Claudia, 16; Ursula, 12; and Wendy, 14, all of whom take part in the Saquilaj B'e joint program run by @unesco, @unfpa, @opspaho, @unicefguatemala & @unwomen in Llano de Los Tuices, Guatemala. ⠀ Photo: @_saul.martinez

"Before the White Ribbon program, I thought girls should stay at home. Now I know girls should get to go to school and work jobs. We also talk about why forced marriage is bad." Josue, 15, shares what he's learned in the San Andres Xecul White Ribbon program, which is run by @UNFPA and @UNWomen and teaches boys and girls about how to combat forced marriage and violence against women in their own communities.
